Turn 1 Turn 2 Turns 3 & 4

This is actually the closest Velodrome to Tucson at this time, in Hermosillo [ārmōsē'yō], the capital of the state of Sonora. It's a 250 meter track with 45 degree banks.

Getting there: From Tucson, it's a little more than 4 hours of driving. You take Interstate 19 South to the town of Nogales. The kilometer markers count down to zero at Hermosillo and it's about 270 km from Nogales. If you haven't already purchased vehicle insurance, stop at Don Smith Mexico Auto Insurance just to the right of the Safeway in Nogales (we paid $28 for 48 hours). After crossing into Mexico you'll go through a toll several kilometers down for about $1.80 (Pesos are approximately 10 times the dollar, so it's $18 pesos). 15 miles from the border you'll need to stop at a checkpoint to get a vehicle permit for the owner of the vehicle (take your passports when traveling into Mexico); this is a free permit, but they don't really speak English. There are a couple of inspection stations along the way and chances are you'll just be waved through. When you approach some of the smaller towns on the Northern part of the route, you'll see signs for Tope (speed bump) and these are extreme. You'll later hit a 35 peso toll and then just as you arrive at Hermosillo, you'll have a 55 peso toll. I couldn't find any maps for sale of Hermosillo, so you may want to use the PDF version below which has the most detail.

Turn right at the first big light in Hermosillo (there is a small light before that, but you can't turn right) onto Blvd. Ignacio Soto which will later change to Periferico Norte. It will eventually come to a light at Blvd. Solidaridad at which you will turn left and see the "Centro de Usos Multiples" sports center (several large buildings with no signage). After a few hundred yards, there will be a right turn availble that will take you down to the track. You can see the white wall of the track from the street on the right hand side of this street.

As you approach the track from the East (from Solidaridad), you'll see the large white wall of the cement track. The start/finish line is on the street side, but the only access to the inside is on the opposite side.

Staying there:
The closest hotel is San Angel Hotel, with rates of 550 pesos for a single and 600 pesos for a double. It is a few blocks further South down Solidaridad and then turn right at the light on Hwy 16 towards the airport and it's on the left just a 100 yards down. There is another nice hotel, the Hotel Santiago Plaza; you would turn left at that same intersection to get there and it's just a few blocks down next to the police station: 600 pesos for a double. Both have somewhat secure parking.

Returning:
On your return trip, be sure to take the route to Central Nogales. The border crossing is usually much shorter that way.

Track Usage:
U.S. riders are welcome to attend meets that Mexico puts on there. In addition, they have offered free use of the track by Arizona riders, for training or events. If we contact Alfredo Gomez with at least 5 days notice, they'll make sure that we get keys to the storage rooms and the lights and they'll even set up tarp tents for us. Neil Stewart is to be our contact person for coordinating usage.

Racing: January 7 & 8, 2006
