August 9, 2006, Masters Track Nationals, 500 meter TT 50-54
Colorado Springs, CO

This was the second event on the first day of the 2006 Masters National Track Championships after the 200. I had hoped that my best chances would be in this event, based on my performance in San Diego last year. Although decades ago, this would not have been my strongest event, I knew that the longer events would be dominated by Kent Bostick and that he would take the gold. At least in this event, I might have a chance and I had spent the last seven months working towards this achievement.

At the Arizona State Championships in San Diego a week and a half prior, I had only marginally improved my time from 2005 with a 38.4 second ride. My best time in 2005 was 39.3, so this was not as dramatic an improvement as I had desired. This time I bumped my gear up to a 51 x 14 from the 49 x 14 used in San Diego, due to the thinner air here that would allow faster speeds.

Start of the 500:

Once again, my lack of recent track riding created a problem, as I spent most of my concentration on trying to ride a straight line in the banking rather than pushing myself faster. The 1.5 lap race took me 37.44, a personal best, but only good enough for 10th and a couple seconds slower than what I had set for a goal.

Richard Voss was again very quick, but that was only good for second as Roy Simonson won.
