August 10, 2006, Masters Track Nationals, 2000 meter TT 50-54
Colorado Springs, CO
This was the second day of the 2006 Masters National Track Championships.
Kent Bostick was favored to win and he did not disappoint, setting a World Record time.
This type of event used to be my best 30 years ago, but I had not really been preparing myself for it this year.
At the Arizona State Championships in San Diego a week and a half prior, I had improved my time with a 2:35.53 ride and I felt pretty good during that ride.
My best time in 2005 was 2:40.3, so this was not as dramatic an improvement as I had desired.
This time I bumped my gear up to a 51 x 13 from the 49 x 13 used in San Diego, due to the thinner air here that would allow faster speeds.
I was hoping that I could do a great ride.
The tricky part would be to determine what speeds would work.
In my excitement, I started off a bit strong and neglected to monitor my speedometer.
The first 1.5 laps of 500 meters was done in 38.09 and the first 1000 meters in 1:11.89.
Although I felt fine up to that point, it quickly started to hit me and the last half of the ride was very difficult.
The ideal ride will have consistent times throughout the ride (with about a 5 to 6 second start extra to get up to speed from a standing start).
In comparison, Kent set a new World Record for 50-54 and did his first 1000 m in 1:12.49 and Woody Cox set a new World Record for 55-59 and did his 1000 m in 1:10.269, finishing with 2:24.439.
So maybe I just need to figure out how to discipline myself to keep going in the second half.

Struggling in. |
This being only my second 2000 in the last 13 months and no experience at these higher altitudes, I again did not give my best capable time.
My goal had been to try for a 2:25, but starting a little too fast made that very difficult.
At least the thin air did not seem to be a problem during the ride, as I had feared that I may be wheezing like crazy.
